Japan Pension Refund Support

Japan Pension Refund & Tax Refund Support for Former Foreign Residents

If you worked in Japan and were enrolled in Employees’ Pension Insurance, you may be eligible for a lump-sum withdrawal payment after leaving Japan. PenPos supports the process clearly and securely, including the related tax refund procedure where applicable.

  • Claim what you are entitled to through a structured, end-to-end process
  • No upfront fee — our fee is deducted only after the refund is completed
  • Applications must generally be made after leaving Japan and within the required filing window

Refund amounts vary depending on factors such as your salary level and enrollment period. For many eligible applicants, the refund is meaningful, and the 20.42% withholding tax on Employees’ Pension Insurance payments may also be recoverable through a separate tax refund process.

What is the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment?

The lump-sum withdrawal payment is a system that allows foreign nationals who were enrolled in Japan’s Employees’ Pension Insurance to receive a partial refund of the pension premiums they paid once they leave Japan and deregister their residence.

The amount varies depending on your income level and length of enrollment. In some cases it may be relatively modest, while in others it can be substantial.

Illustrative examples:

Monthly salary of ¥300,000 for 1 year: approx. ¥250,000–¥300,000
Monthly salary of ¥500,000 for 3 years: approx. ¥1,000,000–¥1,500,000
Monthly salary of ¥650,000 with three annual bonuses of ¥1.5 million for 5 years: over ¥5,600,000
(Income tax of 20.42% may be withheld at payment, and that tax may later be reclaimed through a separate tax refund procedure.)

General eligibility requirements:

  1. Non-Japanese nationality
  2. Enrolled in Employees’ Pension Insurance for at least 6 months
  3. No registered address in Japan at the time of claim
  4. Application submitted within 2 years after leaving Japan
  5. Not already entitled to a Japanese old-age pension based on long-term coverage
